It was finally time to check my site for updates. I have been allowing WP to apply its own security updates for a while and this time I needed to manually apply a major update.

WordPress to Sphinx?

It has been a little while since I last posted something. So this post is a little bit of a progress update. I am still investigating moving away from WordPress to a static site using Sphinx. It turns out there is quite a bit to research and learn about. Whilst the transition of this website into a static form might still be some way off I am finding Sphinx very useful for my own notes and research.

Data Export

I’m still considering moving this site from being WordPress based over to a static site. My plan is to conduct a few experiments first to see how the process works and if the end result would work the way I want it to.

New Theme Experiment

I have had a little more time to play with the twentynineteen theme. I’m still not convinced by the new ‘blocks’ based layout at this stage. Whilst I get the idea of being able to move the content blocks around when putting a page together the features I want are not yet there.

Planning Ahead

I probably look at the front page of this site more than most. I am starting to wonder if it needs a good refresh. Earlier in the year I began writing up some notes on my experiments with ARM development. During this process I ran into a few formatting issues that I worked around. It is still my plan to write up some more of my notes in the future but rather than fight against the current system I might try something new. The next version of WordPress is due out in December, this is probably the best place to start from. Years ago I used a heavily customised site but as WordPress moved on I began to rely more on the templates generated by others. They are good building blocks as they handle the responsive design aspects. I think some more customisation from me might on the cards this time.

WordPress Theme Frustration

I have been using WordPress for this site since I set it up. Over the years the platform has developed significantly. I used to spend hours creating a customised site from scratch. I abandoned this approach a few years ago due to the focus on ‘responsive design’ allowing the site to be viewed on mobile screen sizes and aspect ratios. I moved to the pre-created templates and modified them.

New Theme Time

I have been using the same theme for this site for many years now. Over that time Wordpress, which powers the site, has undergone many changes and improvements. In that time the way the Wordpress code combines with the theme has changed. This has resulted in my aging theme containing legacy code whilst at the same time not supporting some newer features. I had in the past updated the theme adding in new changes where possible but I think now is the time for a radical change. I’m throwing away the old design and starting again with the twentyfourteen theme as a base. There are design elements which I had been working on with the old theme which I will port across. This approach will hopefully mean a more complete and stable theme for years to come. In the short term there will be things that need adjusting so it’s likely to be a little while before the site takes on its final form.

Mobile Theme

I was trying to solve the Web Font issue and stumbled across a plug-in for a mobile theme. The theme was set to ignore the Nexus 7 as a mobile device but I have decided to re-enable it for that. I’m unlikely to put further work into a mobile theme. The plug-in is all you are getting.

New Year, New Ideas, Problems Solved

Well its now 2010, Happy New Year!!!, and my mailserver guide is still not on the site. It has not been forgotten and in fact part of the guide is already hidden away under going editing. One of the issues that was delaying progress was finding the best way to display code on the site. There are alot of plugins for Wordpress that will do syntax highlighting using Geshi. What I have wanted to do is highlight specific lines of highlighted syntax to make it easier to show changes. I did a little research and found that Geshi already supports the functionality I required but it hadn’t been implemented in any Wordpress plugins. So I decided to modify one. I selected CodeColorer to modify as it already had a method of processing arguments within the “cc” tag it uses.

A Fatter Website

Deltanova has put on a little weight this weekend and not because of too much curry and beer. The change has taken place to enable the website to fit a 10” netbook screen width. Displays smaller than this are nolonger common on desktop machines so it makes sense to make use of the greater screen width. I’m not maximising to fill 24” displays as thats going too far and reading is more difficult over such a screen width. The change forms part of my plan to put more example code onto the site; wider page means less line wrapping. More tweaks to the site are planned but they are likely to be smaller, less noticable steps.

A Few Changes

Another quiet month from me but a few things have been happening behind the scenes. I have moved the site from personal to professional hosting. Wave Goodbye To WebbAlert

It’s unfortunate that my first post in 2009 has to be on this sad topic but I guess it has been on the cards for a few weeks now. The nice twice/thrice weekly tech update presented by Morgan Webb has come to an end. This means her smilling face will be missing from the main page of this site in future. The reason according to webbalert.com is that Morgan has more pressing regular commitments and does not have the time to dedicate to this project. It is certainly a shame and you will be missed. A few minutes of condensed tech news allowed me and others to keep up to speed on world tech happenings. There doesn’t appear to be an alternative at the moment :(.

Code Snippet Plugin

Hopefully by the end of the year I might publish one or two of my scripts/programs on the site. Lines and lines of same colour text is hard to analyse when trying to understand a program, every programmer will use an editor with syntax highlighting given the chance. Progress Report

It’s been a long day of work on the site, many things have changed. There are still things about the design I want to change, but on the whole it looks better than it did 24 hours ago. I decided to split the data in the right column into boxes to breakup the solid block of colour. The Weather Pixie has made a welcome return, although might move location yet. Currently the right column is quite wide resulting in some space to the right of the boxes. I could reduce this but it’s going to upset the titles in the pages section. Going to see how that plays out as the tweaking continues before deciding on a final solution.

New Site Logo

As much as i liked the old image, it was too big. During the site upgrade I noticed my bandwidth usage logs. Since the introduction of the Lightning header the bandwidth usage per month had shotup by over 40%. This was getting on towards 50% of the monthly hosting allowance and I decided something needed to be done. The initial idea was to try and recompress the image to a smaller file size. This was abandoned after it became clear the only way to reduce the file size enough would be by reducing the quality to a point where the image looked awful. The search then began for a new header image.

WordPress 2.0

Over the past few days I have upgraded the site to WordPress 2.0. On the face of it not alot has changed but behind the scenes its brilliant. Apart from making it easier to create posts there is a cross site anti-spam system. It works by keeping a master list of comment spam from other sites and checking each new post to the site against it. Hopefully this will mean an end to removing vast quantities of spam from the site. To be honest it has been kind of depressing when I have thought about posting on the site only to discover I need to do the housekeeping tasks.

Bookmark Page On The Way

I’ve noticed this week that I have bookmarked a serious ammount of webpages of interest to me. I don’t go around bookmarking everything in site, that would be silly, but they are accumulating at an alarming rate. The plan is to have a sort out and put the useful ones up on the site. Adding them all to the sidebar would take forever and I would rather have them on a page or pages that didn’t require alot of scrolling. If I really get into the bookmarking mood I might even give a rating for the links. If I am reduced to getting excited about sorting bookmarks I need a job quicker than I thought. If I take too long in doing it, post a complaint.

Template Change

💡️ I have been considering a change to the way the posts are displayed. The reason for this is to make it easier for me to add content to the site. My first thought to the solution to the problem was to code header and footer code for other pages and write separate pages with the included code. Then I looked at adamwalker.34sp.com. This site has put less focus on the date of the post and more focus on what the post actually says. By adopting a similar system I would be able to put links to posts which could become pages without the obvious date header. Plus I would be able to use the same template system which would make future graphical changes simpler. I dont know exactly when this change is likely to take place ❓️ but i hope to test it in the near future 😀️
