Bookmarks

I use Firefox as my web browser. I’ve been using it for years. During that time I have accumulated a huge amount of bookmarks. In being able to migrate my Firefox profile by copying it between machines and between installs my bookmarks have migrated too. Some I can’t remember why I even bookmarked them in the first place.

Poodle SSLv3

Well another week another security issue. This time it is a weakness in SSLv3. This is an older protocol (replaced by TLS) but can still be used in some circumstances. The Mozilla Security Blog article contains details. A quick fix for Firefox users is to install SSL Version Control plugin to disable use of SSLv3. SSLv3 will be disabled by default in Firefox 34 when it is released towards the end of November.

A Lucky Escape

In my previous post I reported that I am moving from a Be ADSL connection to BT Infinity2. Imagine my relief when I read this news today - BSkyB To Buy O2 Be Home Fixed Line Broadband Service. Looks like I am getting out just in time. Sky are not going to be getting any of my money. I have had to dig out the old Be router from the garage to send back, they want to charge me £36 otherwise.

Fibre Broadband

Well I am getting tired of waiting for BE to offer up a fibre broadband product. I had been looking around and comparing a few offers. Ideally I wanted FTTP (Fibre-To-The_Premises) but this is not on offer yet so FTTC (Fibre-To-The-Cabinet) is my only option. The cabinet is a couple of streets away and the online line checkers suggest I might get in the region of 66Mb download and upto 20Mb upload. This would be a vast improvement over my current 10Mb download speeds via ADSL.

An Experiment In Web Fonts

DeltaNova might look a little different from today. I have changed the font of the site to something I think is a little easier to read. I am using one of Google’s Web Fonts, meaning a font downloaded during the page loading, rather than using the font on your hard disk. Why do this? The main reason is that not all fonts are available on all devices. This was easy to cater for when most people accessed the web with a desktop or laptop with known default fonts, but more people are accessing from varying mobile devices. Using a Web Font will allow me to style the site as I intend it to look without caring what fonts the end user has access to.

Mailserver Project: Another Update

I was hoping to begin this month with news that my mailserver project was reaching the milestone objective of being secure and working, alas it is not to be. The good news is that over the past month I have made significant progress and am in the final stages of securing and testing.

Wave Goodbye To WebbAlert

It’s unfortunate that my first post in 2009 has to be on this sad topic but I guess it has been on the cards for a few weeks now. The nice twice/thrice weekly tech update presented by Morgan Webb has come to an end. This means her smilling face will be missing from the main page of this site in future. The reason according to webbalert.com is that Morgan has more pressing regular commitments and does not have the time to dedicate to this project. It is certainly a shame and you will be missed. A few minutes of condensed tech news allowed me and others to keep up to speed on world tech happenings. There doesn’t appear to be an alternative at the moment :(.

Time Sink

Over the past 3 and a bit months I have been playing Eve-Online, a massively multiplayer game set in outer space. This has been the first time I have played something like this for any great length of time and like any game it took me the best part of 3 months playing to get to the stage where I had a few options.

Web TV Streaming

The end of February is fast approaching and I spent much of the month roaming the web discovering many new offerings. The BBC lauched its iplayer service at Christmas and I have on the odd occasion used it to catch up on a missed TV show. Given the choice however I like to keep a week ahead with some TV shows by watching the follow on episode on the extra digital channels. This can pose a problem for me as I tend to spend most of my evenings during the week in a Travelodge somewhere in the UK, sadly they don’t do BBC 3 and rarely anything more than 4 Terrestrial Channels. Now thats the background done with; on with the reason for this entry.

Is Google Getting Too Big Too Quickly?

A few years ago now Google was, for me, just a search engine. It performed well and as time went by nice new features began to appear. Little things, like being able to type in a calculation or conversion and recieve an answer. Useful tools in a plain interface that loaded quickly.

Hotmail Time Saving Tips

I got an email in my hotmail inbox, detailing ways the service could help me save time. The only way its going to save me time is if Microsoft stop filling it with spam and pointless messages I have to check.

Radio Times

I have been using the Radio Times website for my tv and radio listings guide for some time now. The only thing it lacked was more of the Freeview listings. Not only have they gone and added the freeview channels but they have added a nice customisable interface. Check it out.

Windows XP SP2

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is now available via windows update. Although is was reported to be available sooner it was only a restricted distribution. NTL Now Faster :)

I noticed today that those kind folk at NTL have finally decided to speed up my connection. I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a while but with no confirmed date it came as a bit of a surprise. My 600k line is now a 750k line and its not costing me anymore :). Now I just need to find a way to use it all. I’m sure I’ll manage.

Over The Limit

Whilst NTL are going on about restricting my Bandwidth usage I have decided to take advantage of the current situation and d/l as much as possible. So far in the past 36 hours I have overused what NTL say is my 14 day excess bandwidth allowance. I paid for an unlimited service and that’s what I’m going to use😀️.

NTL Cable

NTL have been prating about with the cables again. Today I was left without net access for several hours. During this time I became quite distressed at my lack communication with the outside world and had to engage in face to face conversation with another person. This was distressing in itself and I spent the next few hours crouched in a corner hiding my face from the chaos around me.
