WordPress to Sphinx?

It has been a little while since I last posted something. So this post is a little bit of a progress update. I am still investigating moving away from WordPress to a static site using Sphinx. It turns out there is quite a bit to research and learn about. Whilst the transition of this website into a static form might still be some way off I am finding Sphinx very useful for my own notes and research.

I Still Dislike KiCAD

ARM Update

Over a year ago I wrote up some notes on setting up an ARM development environment. Since then a change has occurred. Low Level libraries have been made available for the STM32F103. These should fit between the HAL library and the code I was writing. How well the Low Level libraries work is currently an unknown. I haven’t found the time to investigate. The tool chain should largely be the same. A few additional includes may be required to add the Low Level libraries. I hope before too long to try them out to see how they compare to my current method.

A New Computer

This month I gave up on waiting and ordered the remaining parts for a new PC. The build process was as easy as expected. Planning Ahead

I probably look at the front page of this site more than most. I am starting to wonder if it needs a good refresh. Earlier in the year I began writing up some notes on my experiments with ARM development. During this process I ran into a few formatting issues that I worked around. It is still my plan to write up some more of my notes in the future but rather than fight against the current system I might try something new. The next version of WordPress is due out in December, this is probably the best place to start from. Years ago I used a heavily customised site but as WordPress moved on I began to rely more on the templates generated by others. They are good building blocks as they handle the responsive design aspects. I think some more customisation from me might on the cards this time.

The Accidental Screenshot

Whilst having a clean up of files I noticed a number of screen shots I had taken over the past 12 months. In total 12 screen shots, only one of which I actually intended to take. So what is the big deal about 11 unwanted screen shots? Well those 11 images add up to 16.3MB in size. Not a huge amount when you think of hard disk sizes in the terabytes but its still additional unwanted data that gets included in my backups. It is interesting however that I seem to accidentally hit the print screen key about once per month on average.

6400K

Since my previous desk lamp suffered from structural failure I have been using a small LED based lamp. It hasn’t been the same. In part down to the reduced height casting light over a much smaller area. My main grumble has been that the light was too warm and yellow. If I am working on a project not only do I want light spread all over my work area but I also light that I can use to read and see detail. Using a tall second hand fluorescent lamp, my workspace was significantly more illuminated than with the short LED lamp. The fluorescent lamp had a colour temperature of 2700K, putting it at the warm end of the spectrum. It didn’t have the right feel about it, it was too comforting and relaxing. Changing the lamp to one of 6400K generated a much cooler, whiter light. Perfect for what I need.

New Projects

This month I have started a couple of new projects. It began as one but soon split. The primary project was to make use of a 128x64 I2C OLED display. It has been sitting on the side for a few months after an impulse purchase. It soon became apparent that I needed a way to generate static images for the screen. Although there were programs out there that would convert a bitmap image into the hex code I needed, many were for Windows. So I decided to have a go at converting it myself.

This month I finally called in the Rat Man to rid me of the menace in the loft. He managed to attend 2 out of the 3 scheduled visits. Having time off work and his no show did not go down well. Ending The Year With A Bang

I appear to have suffered an explosive decompression in my garage. I suspect that the recent cold weather and an already cold fridge to be the cause. Chromebook to Ultrabook

Over the weekend I spent some time removing ChromeOS from an Acer C720 and replacing it with Fedora 20. Although I still need to add a few more tweaks to the setup I have ended up with absolute bargain. I purchased the C720 as a refurbished model, this was to save a few pounds and to get a 32GB SSD rather than the 16GB version available from the Google Play store. The Fedora install and handful of applications I needed only take up around 5GB of space leaving plenty to work with. Battery life is excellent. General desktop usage easily manages 6-8 hours, streaming video/using the wifi would appear to reduce this somewhat. So for £165 inc delivery (plus a weekend of setup time) I can say I am very happy with my purchase.

Cooling Things Down

Summer is approaching and the weather is getting slowly warmer. This brings with it the annual problem of having a computer in the bedroom kicking out heat and making it too warm. Another issue that had been causing me some bother for a few years is the power settings on my graphics card, a Radeon HD6850, when running Linux. I use the open source radeon driver as keeps improving overtime and has enough of the performance of the closed source official driver for my needs. The one thing that has been lacking in my particular case has been the dynamic adjustment (radeon.dpm) of the card to keep it running cool. I have been forced to manually set the card to a low power state each time I reboot the machine. Failing to do this means the card boots up running full speed and quite happy to warm the place up. The downside is that I am always in the low power state and any tasks that might make use of a bit of extra power never get it unless its specifically enabled.

New Theme Time

I have been using the same theme for this site for many years now. Over that time Wordpress, which powers the site, has undergone many changes and improvements. In that time the way the Wordpress code combines with the theme has changed. This has resulted in my aging theme containing legacy code whilst at the same time not supporting some newer features. I had in the past updated the theme adding in new changes where possible but I think now is the time for a radical change. I’m throwing away the old design and starting again with the twentyfourteen theme as a base. There are design elements which I had been working on with the old theme which I will port across. This approach will hopefully mean a more complete and stable theme for years to come. In the short term there will be things that need adjusting so it’s likely to be a little while before the site takes on its final form.

System Email

On my Fedora system I collect the system emails to my user account. This results in a selection of daily emails outlining statuses which I am prompted to deal with whenever I launch a terminal. In the past I have used the “mail” command to read and delete the messages. It is not the easiest mail reader to deal with however. The fallback has been to use Evolution which is part of Gnome. I have never been a fan of Evolution, instead preferring Thunderbird. Thunderbird does not support the maildir format used by the system email and as such has been ruled out. I am going to be trying out Mutt, it is a command line reader that I found already installed on my system. The interface is structured unlike “mail” and even lists the shortcuts for commonly used commands. For my needs I don’t need to configure Mutt to do anything. I did find a couple of links that may prove useful in making Mutt your primary email client.

Fan Repair

Since moving into my house I have been suffering the noisy bathroom extractor fan. It has been on the to do list of DIY jobs but never seemed to reach the top. Yesterday however the sound of the fan changed slightly during spin down and I decided it was time to investigate. What you should do is turn off the mains power to make it safe before you start opening it up. I had the washing machine on at the time and not knowing which circuit it was on decided to take my chances. Upon removing the cover and getting covered in what can only be assumed to be 20 years worth of bathroom dust I noticed the problem. The centrifugal fan had far too much movement on its motor mount or rather the motor itself was loose on its mountings. Removing the fan from the ceiling and peering in through the non-return flaps I found the motor mounting screws. A good few turns to each screw indicated how loose the motor had shaken over time. Reassembling and activating I was greeted by less low frequency vibration/rumble and more of a quieter humming fan. It’s not as quiet as a new fan unit would be but its much much better than it has been. I have probably saved myself about £40-50 on not having to buy a new fan just yet. Not getting an electric shock whilst repairing it I class as an added bonus.

The Colander

I had been using a plastic colander for many years to drain pasta, a task it performed well. I have been disappointed by its draining ability when it comes to lettuce and leafy greens. There are two reasons for this. Firstly pasta is drained to remove most of the water, you need a little left to lubricate the sauce over the pasta and to stop the pasta burning when placed back into the pan after straining. Secondly lettuce has a large surface area which likes to hold onto water. The lettuce I wish to drain more as the residual water is thinning the salad dressing (Caesar) and making a watery mess.

My intent is that these changes get pulled back into the main project. In the mean time my version of the codecolorer wordpress plugin is available here .

Now that the winter months are upon us getting out of bed in the morning has become more of a chore. The difference in room/duvet temperature is difficult to overcome. An Experiment In Web Fonts

DeltaNova might look a little different from today. I have changed the font of the site to something I think is a little easier to read. I am using one of Google’s Web Fonts, meaning a font downloaded during the page loading, rather than using the font on your hard disk. Why do this? The main reason is that not all fonts are available on all devices. This was easy to cater for when most people accessed the web with a desktop or laptop with known default fonts, but more people are accessing from varying mobile devices. Using a Web Font will allow me to style the site as I intend it to look without caring what fonts the end user has access to.

Too Cold To Freeze

Last night I made the unwelcome discovery that my garage has been reaching the low low temperature at which my freezer stops cooling and starts warming. What made the discovery more unwelcome was my arrival back from the supermarket with a selection of goods to freeze. Rearranging a few items and consuming half a crispy duck; most of my provisions had been relocated. Tonight however was the big pizza bake. Three frozen pizzas (or thawed in this case) went in the oven. Stuffing my face I was still left with a remainder to go into the fridge. Tomorrow I have the option of 2 more pizzas or a pork dish for 4 people. It now appears that the freezer in the kitchen isn’t too happy either. I wasn’t planning on it but it’s a weekend of Man V. The Rat Saga Continues

My recent posts have been detailing my war with the local rodent population. The battle has moved from the kitchen into the loft in recent weeks. During the loft insulation project several large holes were sealed trapping the enemy in the loft, numbers unknown. A clean kill and subsequent silence on the front lead me to believe a victory had been achieved. A scouting mission today showed the bait had been taken and my foe had gone to ground avoiding detection. Cut off from its usual supply line it had taken the tainted food cache. I can’t see my enemy but they are there. The signs of droppings not present before are an indicator of the restriction in their movements. The trap has been set, it is only a matter of time before their desperation leads to their downfall.

The battle has ended in a minor victory for me, advancing the front line past the first line of defences. The terrain ahead of me will pose a serious issue for I cannot follow the path my enemy treads. I shall ready the weapons of war and plan my attack. I have him under siege now, my victory in this war edges ever closer.

Lack Of Bins & Placement

In my previous post I outlined in a somewhat comic fashion the note I had found in my bin with regards to its placement on a pavement. The note had been placed there for good reason as a number of bins mine included had been strewn about. Now that was some weeks back and ever since the bin has been moved back and neatly positioned to allow for clear passage. Due to the bins location and the sloped bank and steps at the rear of my property it has not been practical to bring them inside the property boundary for health and safety reasons. I don’t want to fall down steps with a heavy bin on me. So they have been sitting there happily until today.

On the upper floor however things have taken a turn for the worst; No water at all. This leaves me with a toilet I can’t flush and a sink, bath/shower I can’t use. Windows 7 + CUPS - Problem Solved

I have been trying to get my Windows 7 (Pro) machine to connect to the CUPS printer on my Linux server. Whilst it used to work with Windows XP (Home) via IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) I was having no luck with Windows 7. One reason for the problem is my network security and firewalls. I lock down everything unless it is actually needed. This means that all the auto discovery services on the network can’t talk to each other. Still knowing the IP address and ports of the relevant machine/service to connect to is normally enough to get things working. Not in this case however. For some reason either at the Windows or CUPS end the IP address was causing a problem. The problem being that the it wasn’t being resolved to a machine name when trying to setup the IPP connection.

No More Gentoo

Over the past month I have been getting to grips with using Fedora 14 on my Laptop, Netbook and Desktop. The install replaces the previous Gentoo installs. My primary reason for switching distribution has been updates and time. To keep machines upto date with security patches Gentoo needed to recompile alot of packages in some cases. This for some things could take time to compile and compile errors would sometimes occur. When things didn’t compile it sometimes broke the system in such a way that it would be unusable until it was fixed, this could mean waiting a day or so, especially with the compiling errors. So enough was enough, Fedora with its pre-compiled binary packages was the answer.

The system has 8GB RAM but the 32bit nature of XP meant that only 4GB of memory could be addressed. In addition Windows 7 supports newer versions of DirectX. There are games on the horizon which I plan on getting which will require a newer graphics card which will use the newer DirectX. So that is the reason for the upgrade, now onto the installation itself.

OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian & Gentoo - Experiences

I decided to try another distro and after some initial reading decided to try Fedora 13 (64bit). The install on my server went smoothly and I had a working machine in no time. Some minor annoyances however caused me to switch back to Gentoo. The main problem was with Fedora introducing a bug somewhere resulting in my mouse cursor disappearing on resuming from the screen saver. Only a reboot could solve that one. The Fedora forums indicated a problem with my integrated graphics chip but didn’t offer a working solution. Added to this was the problem with Firefox plugins. Fedora seemed to get in the way a little and prevent them from working normally. So my server is back on Gentoo and running fine now.

One of the issues that was delaying progress was finding the best way to display code on the site. There are alot of plugins for Wordpress that will do syntax highlighting using Geshi. What I have wanted to do is highlight specific lines of highlighted syntax to make it easier to show changes. I did a little research and found that Geshi already supports the functionality I required but it hadn’t been implemented in any Wordpress plugins. So I decided to modify one. A Fatter Website

Deltanova has put on a little weight this weekend and not because of too much curry and beer. The change has taken place to enable the website to fit a 10” netbook screen width. Displays smaller than this are nolonger common on desktop machines so it makes sense to make use of the greater screen width. I’m not maximising to fill 24” displays as thats going too far and reading is more difficult over such a screen width. The change forms part of my plan to put more example code onto the site; wider page means less line wrapping. More tweaks to the site are planned but they are likely to be smaller, less noticable steps.

Problems occur however when multiple events coincide and reveal a change in behaviour or problem. Such an event recently occured; my previous post explained the issues I was having with Xorg Server. When updating my sever and power desktop I ran into an intermittant issue with sporadic keyboard lag. Xorg-Server Upgrade Nightmare

Recently when applying the updates to my Gentoo Linux machines a new version of Xorg-Server was presented. Normally package updates are straight forward, this one on the other hand needed a big change in drivers and config files. My main issue with the upgrade is the poor upgrade documentation, there is a lack of detail surrounding the conversion of the old config file into the new config file. Now I can see the reasoning behind the change in config file syntax, it now provides fine grained control of options on a per device basis whilst allowing for common options to be applied to mutiple devices.

Directing the output directly to the printer uses a font which is over large and a waste of paper.

Foresights Conary package manager takes a different approach and only swaps out the bits which have changed. This makes it more efficient as your saving on the amount of downloading you need to do for a new package.

Halloween - Over for another year

The evening of October 31st is, for me, one of darkness. No it’s not my evil side taking over, although I suppose it depends on your point of view. The darkness comes from the turning off of the house lights to reduce the chances of a horde of scavengers attacking the front door with their grubby paws and demanding freebies upon its being opened. I don’t think on any other night of the year I could go to a random series of houses and ask for sweets/chocolate and be given the requested items willingly. So why should I expect to do it on October 31st?

Gentoo Linux - Toshiba Satellite X200/X205 (part 4)

Time for an update on my progress of installing Gentoo Linux on my Toshiba X200-20S. I have been managing to get audio playing out of the integrated speakers, so I assumed it was all working and setup correctly, wrong. When I tried to plug in my headphones the audio continues to be played out of the speakers. The problem appears to be an unsupported codec chip (ALC286). Now the good news is that support for this chip has been integrated into the 2.6.23 series of kernels. The downside is that they have not yet been marked for testing as gentoo-sources. I could try a vanilla kernel but I’d rather have the gentoo tweaks. Once it’s available for testing I shall give it a shot and see if it solves my problems.

Things To Complain About

There is a section of road that is possibly the worst new creation in the UK. Exiting the M40 to get to the M1 via the A43 is awful, especially at rush hour. There are far too many roundabouts restricting the flow of traffic along this route. The result is several miles of slowly moving traffic and the risk of more accidents. The whole design seems to be a money saving plan rather than making the journey of the motorist easier, they should reconsider the whole design and come up with something more practical.

Project Zombie: Update #2

Well the new powersupply seems to have done the trick as I am writing this on the resurrected machine. I’m still not 100% happy with it though. When powered down the IDE status LED on the front of the case stays dimly lit, as does the LED on the CDRW. My investigations lead me to believe this to be a fault on the Secondary IDE channel and/or problems with one or both of the CD/DVD drives. The IDE LED is related to the actual IDE cable, where the drive LED seems to be related to the molex power connector. I suspect some damage to the drive from the old power supply or degrading capacitors leaking a little. I am going to monitor the situation, hopefully it will not be an issue and the system will run for another few years.

It’s been a long day of work on the site, many things have changed. There are still things about the design I want to change, but on the whole it looks better than it did 24 hours ago. I decided to split the data in the right column into boxes to breakup the solid block of colour. The Weather Pixie has made a welcome return, although might move location yet. Currently the right column is quite wide resulting in some space to the right of the boxes. I could reduce this but it’s going to upset the titles in the pages section. Going to see how that plays out as the tweaking continues before deciding on a final solution.

What Can I Eat????

I was reading the paper today. I was greeted by yet another article telling what I couldn’t eat. Nothing is good to eat anymore. Everything has a level of something that will do me harm. Why do manufacturers have to get rid of supersized products. I’m not the smallest person and consume more than the average person. Sure if I ate supersized meals every day it wouldn’t do me anygood. But I don’t. I might fancy a Mars bar, ” A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play”. It doesn’t anymore, it’s smaller. There will be no king size, you’ll have to buy 2. Notice how the slogan advertised only 1 Mars bar a day. Everything is ok to eat so long as it is in moderation.

Space - I Need More

Space, not the final frontier this time, but rather the lack of. Books, CD’s and computers tend to take up rather alot of space. I had moved my study material into my sisters vacant room. Great I thought. A nice clear work area, away from the distraction of the internet. It was beginning to shape up nicely. Then comes the news that its going to be decorated. So I wind up with 20 folders, numerous books and a huge stack of papers in my room. Where do I put them?? “Have some more shelves” mother insists. This is not an option as a shelving system would make my room (already the smallest bedroom) more enclosed. Enclosed spaces affect my state of well being. I’m just going to ave to live in my clutter.

Phones, Problems Continue

Just when I thought phones couldn’t make life any more difficult they do. They just keep pushing the boundries. This evening the phone rang. Nothing unusual about that. It’s what they do. If it did any more I’d be surprised. On the other end was my grandmother. Nothing unusual about that you might think. Wrong. “Why wrong?”, I hear you ask. Well this particular grandmother doesnt have a phone. Due to the fact she doesnt have a house anymore. She is resident in a nursing home and to my knowledge didn’t have use of a phone. From what I understand she wants out of the place. The problem is she can’t go. She needs the care.

Evil Call Centers & Recorded Messages

That’s it, I’ve had enough. It used to be people calling up selling things from time to time. They used to be irritating, but atleast you could tell somebody to get lost. You’d feel a little better afterwards. These days we get 4+ calls a day per phone line. If you have two lines your getting 8+ calls per day. What makes things worse is that there is not always somebody to shout at. The call centers auto dial a bunch of people. The one who picks up first gets to shout at a person. The rest get silence and hung up on. Frustrating isnt it. The other variety are the recorded mesages telling you that you have won something, or selling the latest deal. They make you want to tear you hair out. This week in particular an irritating banking call center has wanted to speak to a member of my family. But won’t tell you anything until you start giving out personal details. Hmm suspicious.

I Blew Up The Iron :(

It was an unusual day as Tom (my housemate) had decided to use the iron. We never use the iron, its too complicated. After leaving the iron on for 30 mins it still wasnt getting warm. Tom told me this so I decided to check it out. It had water in, everything looked ok except the light wasn’t on. I thought it best to try and change the heat setting as some irons also use this as an on off switch. It was at this point as i held it in my hands, that there was an electric blue flash and a loud bang. I dropped the thing back down onto the tumble dryer where it had been sitting. Its now left a nice little brown mark where the spark earthed itself. Thankfully I’m still allive. It just leaves the explaining to the landlord on how we have blown up one of her electrical items.

The second instance of my insanity was a 4 way conversation with myself about technical support for a Hitachi product that doesn’t exist and wondering why I know nothing about it. I am always amazed at what the mind can come up with when left to think for itself. My mind needs to be locked up in a lead lined room surrounded by a mile of concrete on the hopes that its thoughts don’t escape and corrupt the population.

Immigrants

Whilst I agree partially, its the cultural aspect I disagree with. We in Britain are loosing our culture as it is gradually eroded by immigrants. Sure they can have some influence, I for one enjoy an chineese or indian takeaway. What I dont like is the fact that we have to now respect the rules and opinions of thier culture. They don’t respect ours. If I went to thier country I would be expected to follow thier rules.

An improvement in daytime viewing?

Today, rather than engaging in the revision I should be doing, I observed a new TV show. Terry & Gaby, features Terry Wogan and Gaby Roslin for a light hearted general day time show. However unlike most daytime rubbish this flowed quickly and I found it enjoyable. I think Channel 5 is onto a winner here. I liken it to shows such as the Big Breakfast, in that its witty and doesnt take itself to seriously. When I get the chance I shall be a frequent viewer if it holds up to the standards of today.

The Saturday Epic 3

The day began with a high pitched tone oscillating my eardrums. Swinging my legs out from under the duvet I achieved a sitting position. The offending alarmed device had its operation terminated via an interrupt request to its keypad. I was conscious at last, well sort of. It was time for some mental stimuli. I proceeded to engage the audio visual media centre via the infra-red link. After a brief discharge the cathode ray tube began to charge to operating status. The steadily increasing brightness made me avert my eyes in much the same way as opening the door and finding the sun in direct line of sight. My sitting position could be maintained no longer. My spine relaxed leaving me lying on the bed once more. My eyes began to close, I tried to stop them. I thought I had won only to discover that 20 mins had passed and it was now 5:20am.

A Meal Out

I was snatched from Somerfield by my parents tonight. “We are going out for a meal” I was told. Here was the first problem. I am still in my work gear. But they thought of that, they brought me a t-shirt. I looked a right prat walking into the Observatory in trousers, shoes and a t-shirt that didnt quite go. So we sit at a table next to one containing a bunch of girls. Then my parents start getting offended by the language they were using. What the fuck do they expect. It’s a local establishment not a highclass place. I don’t give a shit if people are using foul language, its the way people are. I have an open mind. There is nothing worse than trying to talk to the family. It was a stressful experience for all and nobody enjoyed it. The words “well we will never do this again” were uttered at some point and I had a go at my sis for being shallow. She was telling us all about how popular she is and how she can pick and choose who she wants to be friends with. That pissed me off.

Somebody Needs Organising

There are good reasons why I am shy, quiet and live in my room away from human contact. One of these reasons arose tonight. My sister has an art exam tomorrow. She needs a canvas. You think knowing this she would have made full preparations for such and important think, but no. So she began to prepare one. However, it needs priming. The problem here is that she assumed that the emulsion needed to prime it was readily availiable in the house. Secondly she is also going out. Now if this was me I would delay my going out and get the preparation done. Not my sister. She managed to get my dad stressed, my mother stressed and me stressed. Now the house is not a pleasant place to be when this happens. It so happens that my house is rarely a pleasant place. My carefree sister goes about her business and doesn’t see what chaos she causes. This is why i stay in my room most of the time. Atleast I don’t have to worry about upsetting the computer. I also find that most of the other rooms in the house get taken over by art work. Not being allowed to move it, cos its art, i stay in my own space. I make do with what space I have. I wouldn’t mind but I have the smallest bedroom. My sis could quite easily fit all her work in her room was it not so full of crap. You can probably tell I am not happy with the situation this evening. But what can I do about it. I stand up for my rights over the family spaces in the house but I’m the one who gets told by parents to give in as I don’t have priority over them.

How Can She Say That To Me!?!?!?!?

I decided to have a play around with the printer settings and try and get some better photo quality out of it. It was a sucess. Tweaking it I got an excellent photo taken at 4 megapixels to print out at the same size as a normal photo. I then printed another pic out to compare with one done previously. It came out slightly better but as it was taken in 640x480 it wasnt much of an improvement. I decided to show my sister who uses the printer alot for photo prints. I got moaned at for using 2 sheets of photo paper. I wouldn’t mind but she didnt pay for it. If anything it was worth those sheets of paper to have better settings for future printing. She is very closed minded and cant see the bigger picture.

Grey Goo Theory

The dangers of nanotechnology have been highlighted by Prince Charles this week. While nanotech has the benefits of ultra lightweight materials, superfast microprocessors and atom manipulation few consider its danger scenario. If a single nanobot (robot on nano scale) can reproduce itself out of raw materials through atom manipulation, what if it doesn’t stop? If each nanobot reproduced itself and this trend continued it would mean an exponential increase in nanobot population. More nanobots = more raw materials processed. On the atomic scale however raw materials all look the same, a bunch of atoms. So a pile of sand or a human are the same to the nanobot. If rouge nanobots started reproducing they could consume all life on earth. The expected result is grey goo. This grey goo would be everything on earth converted into nanobots. If one rouge nanobot escapes how can you stop it beginning the cycle of destruction. You can’t see it, you cant squash it like a bug.

The Saturday Epic

Today started off badly when I saw John arriving to open up the store. As nice as he is John gets seriously on my nerves at times. But Manager Mike thinks he’s the bees knees. With John on the scene my usual routine went straight out the window, not a good start. John has one way of doing things I have another so having the accept the John method did not please me grately. With the delivery arriving the conflicting views were dissipated for a short while. The agency delivery driver was too cheerful for that time in the morning. Nothing pisses me off more at that time in the morning than an overly cheerful person. One thing of note though, this driver could count. He knew how many cages had gone off the back of the lorry and how many went on. “So what” you yell. Well its an odd occurance for a driver to be able to keep track of everything. Not to say that they are thick but normally they are not the brightest of people. The bread arrived albeit quite a few loafs short(155ish). So as has been requeste of me in previous weeks i began to put it out and reduce old stock as needed. John didn’t like this. Not my department John said. So I basically gave him a look to say “Does it look like i care what you think”. He didn’t pick up on it. I was then going to help out on Dairy but another member of staff had been called in. I was going to aid futhur but oh no John wasnt having it. I was shoved into the hell hole which is the warehouse. Once again I got the same section to work with all the products which never go out and taunt me week after week. Bec wanted to know why I looked depressed. How do I condence down my inner turmoil into a manageable soundbite. I managed anyway and said I was generally down, which is always true of me. Still she kept smiling at me as I went past and just that did wonders to lift my spirits. A general lack of energy and enthusiasm made the morning go slow and this stressed me out. It was nice however to see Hollie on the shop floor for a brief time. About time they let her out from behind that evil till. Exchanging a few word with Hollie, Emma and Jennah raised my happiness lever furthur. This leads me to formulate the expression that “Tunks happiness is proportional to Female contact”. Several more hours of working myself silly I was about ready to have serious words with Rajiv. Rajiv, the fat bastard, does all he can do to not lift a finger. It shows on the great lard bucket too. He has been there 4 months and thinks he owns the place. So what happens to these people that stand around doing as little as possible? They get a pay increase at a rate greater than that of my rise. Yongsters today never had it so lucky. So now he can waste time and even more money doing bugger all. Not that Rajiv is the only one. There are many members of staff that take the piss with how little work they do for their money. Lunch time arrived and I consumed a cheese and pasta salad (You would’t see Rajiv eating it, nor fat Matt). I ended up in the canteen with Gaz and the security guard. Now Gaz is fine and I get on well with him. The security guard just asks stupid questions or tells everybody about what he has or is planning on purchasing for his house. After the first few weeks of this you get fed up of him. Not that he is too bad as I get his extra dohnut whe he has his lunch (today a pastie and pack of dohnuts). In my final hour I was set a task by Mike. Mike being another overly cheerful person at the end of a long day. This did not go down well on the tunk level of satisfactory mind status and irritability meter. I kinda dragged out the task as much as possible trying to reach the Rajiv level of idleness. I failed by a long way. During this task I had to emmpty a split can of Murphys, the sink enjoyed something that resembled chunks of stewing steak. The biggest chunk I named Rajiv on the count of its large presence and it not doing very much at all. 4 o’clock arrived and I was out that door sooner than a Security Guard wanting a free dohnut. Mother didn’t appear to be anywhere instore or outside. So I walked home. On arriving home I discovered she had been there and I had walked all the way home for no reason at all. Not the best end to a day at work but and end atleast.

Gymnasts To Get Internet Access

Williams F1

Today I went for my interview at Williams F1. On arrival at the facility I was amazed at how big it was in comparrison with the rest of Grove where it it located. In actual fact Willams F1 looked to be most of Grove. The car park was wonderful and lined with trees and shrubs which complemented the new gravel surrounded building. Inside was a marble floor. I sat upon a sofa and read one of numerous copies of the history of Williams scattered about. The glass foyer looked out onto a tidy shaped gravel courtyard with stunning flower beds. My interview went quite well I thought. Ian Cartwright (Electrical Technician) who interviewed me was a very pleasant and likable chap. Then came the exciting bit, a look round the facilities. I saw the stripped race cars from Sunday, now just a carbon fiber shell. Its engine by its side looking rather on the small side. Next I saw the milling machines which make the gearbox parts and the room where they put together the carbon fiber parts. The smaller rooms contained systems for processing the datalogging devices with all the data from the race. The steering wheel underconstruction was a marvel of wires and a chunk of carbon fiber. It was an undescribable experience for me. Even if I dont get the job it was worth going for a look round and seeing behind the scenes. Today I am a Happy Bunny. 😁️

I Hate That Place

I don’t know why I agreed to work today but I did. No sooner had I got there Andy H (Deputy Manager) was on my back about not working hard enough. I felt like turning round and saying “I am here cos you asked me to be, if your not happy with my work then its your fault, live with it” but i didn’t. After Bread/Dairy and freezers it was time to advise on the computer problems buggin’ the staff. Firstly it was the ancient EPOS system I suspect to be running either a custom OS, syncom or Unix. Whatever the OS it wasnt responding properly. You know its usual operators are not trained when they dont know how to enter the ‘*’ sign using the shift + 8 keys. That done i was needed again to show Andy H how to shade in a cell in Excel. You see how little computer skills you need to get by in a supermarket management position. The grim day was lightened by Hollie being around. Although she hasnt been speaking to me online of late its still nice to speak to females and get a response from general conversation.

Saturday Night

In a style that is becoming a bit to regular he let us down again. Still even without him it was an enjoyable evening. Once again I failed to pull although Mr Wood acquired a reasonable female (Lucky Bastard ). So I shook my maracas (they were handing them out in Ocean) and got on with getting drunk and enjoying the night. We ended up in a small kebab shop near the bus stop and ordered some pizzas. The prompt arrival of the bus meant these had to be left behind. Good job we didnt pay in advance. Sat at the back of the bus I had the legs of a female across my lap. There she was sprawled across the back giggling and trying not to slip off the seat. All in all it wasn’t a bad night. Might have to go out more often.

Today The Knife Entered My Flesh

I was down, I don’t like my fat self. I didn’t want to eat butI needed to. Something healthy I decided. I took an onion and slowly undressed it until its pale skin was fully visible. The knife shone with silvery brilliance, its blade razor sharp. I knew it was wrong when the blade pierced the delicate skin, a shot of pain from my hand. Quickly the tools were removed from the operation. I had a puncture wound, the tip of the knife had slid into my finger. I watched as the blood rushed to fill the gap. Lucky I was that the cut was a clean one. It sealed up quickly thanks to my fast regenerative cycle. The knife came up again this time the onion had had it. Within minutes its pale body was in pieces. I could hear the call now,”MURDERER!!!” I needed to rid myself of the evidence, quickly. I plunged the fleshy pieces into hot oil, crackling and burning. Complimenting it with bacon, peas and cracked pepper, they would never know. I consumed the evidence, they were not going to find me guilty.

Add to that fact that he didnt know if he had the right RAM. He offered me £10 to go round an sort it out. I declined, not because I didnt want the money. It was the fact he described the power supply was mounted over the motherboard covering it slightly. This would have meant a more complex operation than adding more ram. Add to that fact that I wasnt in the best mood having just been woken up, it was sunday and I was generally pissed off for other reasons I shall not go into here.

A Day Of Stress

Today was a busy day. It started in the EDA (Electronic Design Automation) Lab at 8am this morning. I was testing my VHDL (Virtual Hardware Desgription Language) code for tomorrow. It didn’t go well. It needed nearly a complete rewrite to get it working. I thought I needed to do a second lab prep too and that got me panicking. It turned out this second lot of prep isn’t due till next monday. I finally left the EDA lab after 4.5hr session after lunch. More development at home followed, I have spent nearly 12 hours on it now. I still have so many other things to do. These next 2 weeks before Easter are going to stretch me to my limits. :(

A Common Occurance

It seems that I have upset the natural balance of things by being in a good mood these past 4 days. Nobody wants to talk to me online anymore. This is only going to get me down again. Oddly enough people will then start to talk to me. Probably because i bother them with my moaning about a miserable day.

Mr Fixit

Today the plumber came round to fix the boiler (Yes I know it sounds like the beginning if some cheesy Swedish porn film). After he replaced the thermocouple it still wouldn’t light. He suspected the electrics but didn’t know how to test it. Along came me with Mr Multimeter. After a few seconds of prodding about in the plug I tripped the mains power, at least the plug was working. I tried to test the second plug but i couldn’t get the probes to touch the contacts inside. However after reconnecting the plugs the boiler fired up again. Looks like the contacts in the plugs had oxidised, moving them had remade the contacts. Who needs a plumber when its that simple.

Let The Yanks Go To War

Let the trigger happy Yanks go about killing people so they can have their oil. Why should this country be dragged into war by the US only because the PM is groveling before the President. Even if nothing happens the parliament in this country have been divided. The government has shown how little control is to be had by the people over what this country does as a global influence. Overthrow the governement and lets replace it with something more uptodate.

A Good Start

Early this morning the 2003 F1 season kicked off. The new rules waiting to be tested along with the cars for this season. The rule stating setup of the cars had to be decided upon the previous day had major implications. The race began with a rapidly drying track and the majority of the grid on wet tyres. I shall not go into details as the race is being re-run at the mo and i don’t want to spoil it for those of you who didn.t get up at 2am like me.

Waste of Time

I was up till the early hours (4:30am) of this morning finishing a report for this afternoon. It was a technical report of my Peak Detection Program for the MC68HC11 Microprocessor. This afternoon I was supposed to demo the program and then discus the report. I had to wait from 2 till 3 until i could demo the program. I then had a scheduled slot of 4pm for a brief discussion. Due to a back log of other students the lecturer was lagging behind. By the time 4:30 came I was still waiting. Mr. Saywell (Yes I am going to name you) then decided he would collect in the remaining reports and go though them in his own time. That meant I had wasted and hour and a half just sitting doing nothing. I was well pissed off.

Spending my cash

In an unusual change from my routine I partook of a bit of shopping. “What kind of shopping?” I’m glad you asked that. Shopping for clothes. Not being the slightest bit interested in fashion it was quite an achievement for me to purchase 2 shirts from different shops. Whilst its not going to do anything to vastly change my stunning (feel free to change the last word as appropriate) looks, its something else to wear when I go and flaunt my body on the odd night out. The grand sum of £40 was spent, (the computer fund cries as it realizes its upgrade is now even further away) but why spend less? To celebrate mu purchases I indulged in a couple of pints of ale. Today has been a marvelous day, the week can only get worse.

Busy Day

Today has proven to be a very busy and interesting day. It all started to kick off when I poured soya milk down myself due to it leaking in the package. I was whisked away from my usual routine business to help in the reorganization of the biscuit section. This involved climbing over stock cages whilst not too badly crushing the contents. “Why did you do this?” I did it so i could get some shelves from behind them. Several trips over the top of the cages resulted in a lack of the correct parts. I was dispatched to Focus to get a Hacksaw. (It only cost 78p and was of reasonable quality). Using my tool I abbreviated some perspex edging, Is there no end to my talents? My hulking great mass was then required to maneuver the security box for emptying the cash out of the till. But being me I was heavy handed with the wrist strap and set off the internal alarm. I went a deep shade of red . Twas then time to wreak havoc in the warehouse with the moving of shelves with stock on them. Myself and 7 others used our combined skill to rotate 24 feet of connected shelving through 90 degrees and reposition it. Add on a spot of cleaning/stocking/reducing and that’s my day really.

Kitted out with some rubber gloves a brush and metal dustpan I was herded towards the bushes around the store. My Nemesis awaited, thorny bushes, rotting matter and bags of things which were not describable. After filling a huge green bin to the brim i was finally done. Danger!!! Danger!!!, Mains Voltage

After investigating the base of the lamp I found the warning lable. “Dont place metal objects across the two arms of this product else it will blow the internal fuse and render the product useless” or words to that effect. Anyway, not gining up that easily i opened up the lamps inner workings. I found the elusive fuse. It was wired in series on the low voltage side of the transformer. So i cut away the heatshrink around it to reaveal the blown component. Hmm, cant replace it. So i decided to remove it all together. It now works again but I might endup frying the transformer if i decide to do it again in future.

Soooo Stunning

There she was before me, nothing could compare to her elegant stance. I wandered past, my eyes transfixed on her location. She looks good from all angles. Should I get closer? Yes, yes, i should. From my closer position, her defining lines and curves made my heart flutter. I got closer still my hand brushing against her. So soft, smooth, gentle. Her feet so small and dainty when compared to my own. Oh the times we could enjoy together if only I could get to know her better. I approached her from behind (now now, don’t go thinking like that) my hands trembling I gently stoked her sides. My heart racing I knew now was the time, my mission defined. I removed the nickle plated brass thumb screws and slid off her left side. It was so light, the perspex window expertly riveted into place. I wanted to go further and so did she. Her invitation to remove her right side was eagerly taken up. A solid sheet of brushed aluminium, delightful. There she was before me, unclothed, naked. Never before had a seen such a beautiful frame, crafted by the gods of lian-li. I knew I was one of only a few to see this amazing site. I wanted to keep it safe, clean and secret. I dressed her again. Her elegance returned. I made my excuses and left her. I knew I would return but when. How long could I resist the temptation? Only time will tell.

Happy Bunny

Just a few hours ago a light shone into my life which I thought would be eclipsed forever. Yes folks that’s right, I finally got chatting to Hollie from work on msn messenger 😀️. The day could not have ended on a higher note. It seems that the reason she had not been able to chat sooner is that she had me blocked. I know its hard to believe, me being blocked. She quickly thrust an excuse my way, she didn’t know it was me. Well that’s good enough for me. I don’t even know who i am half the time. Then for some odd reason 😕️ she departed as quickly as she had arrived, no so long or good bye. 😮️ I connection time out i hoped 😀️ but no 😥️. She was gone.

Going Back

Going back to work tomorrow after a relaxing break since last Saturday. Hopefully it wont be the busy mad panic rush of people that have been there over the xmas period. Will the quantity of stock cluttering up the warehouse have been reduced? Like hell will it. The monkey people will have put there tiny minds together and in the resulting chaos will have over ordered as usual filling it to 150% capacity. Looks like I’m gonna have to work my usual magic and try to make as much of it disappear as possible.

Die Another Day

Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan’s latest outing as Ian Flemmings 007 James Bond. This film sees 007 battling against another evil mastermind whos solar weapon is threatening to wreak havoc. A lively action packed film with the right amount of humor and product placement. There are gadgets a plenty to thrill the audience and Halley Berry puts in a stunning supporting performance. However I do feel that the idea of a spin-off featuring Haley Berry wouldn’t work.

Cooking

It has been proven before so I should have know what to expect when dear sis was going to prepare dinner. All there wa to cook were some jacket potatos and some veg to go with a ready meal meat serving. So I here you ask what was wrong. Well the potatos were undercooked like the rest of the veg. Ok ok so veg and potatoes are difficult to cook if your not used to it but ready meals are easy. In this case not so. Sadly it had dried out and was in very short supply. Looks like I’m gonna go hungy. BUT WAIT!!! I purchased a supply of cut price cookies for just these circumstances. Looks like I’m gonna have to eat them all 😃️

xXx

xXx or Tripple X, I went to see this last night. I was pleasently surprised. Yes it was basically a spy film with a slightly different twist but it was refreshing. A good performance was put in by Vin Diesel and the rest of the cast. Although the vision enhanced binoculars were a bit far fetched the rest of the plot although unlikely was atleast plausable. With its flowing pace and plenty of explosions it was a good film.

Template Change

💡️ I have been considering a change to the way the posts are displayed. The reason for this is to make it easier for me to add content to the site. My first thought to the solution to the problem was to code header and footer code for other pages and write separate pages with the included code. Then I looked at adamwalker.34sp.com. This site has put less focus on the date of the post and more focus on what the post actually says. By adopting a similar system I would be able to put links to posts which could become pages without the obvious date header. Plus I would be able to use the same template system which would make future graphical changes simpler. I dont know exactly when this change is likely to take place ❓️ but i hope to test it in the near future 😀️
