I was browsing through the Web Builder(Issue 5) section of .net magazine (Issue 127 September 2004), when I saw a statistic on screen resolutions people use whilst surfing the web.
I normally use a screen resolution of 1280×1024 on my desktop, 1024×768 on my laptop. With the state of screen technology today, I believed that these would be the most popular resolutions. I was shocked to discover that almost 25% of users are still using 800×600.
The complete list was as follows:
1. 1024 x 768 – 54.02%
2. 800 x 600 – 24.66%
3. 1280 x 1024 – 14.1%
4. 1152 x 864 – 4%
5. 1600 x 1200 – 0.8%
6. 640 x 480 – 0.6%
7. 1152 x 870 – 0.1%
How can anybody stand using 800×600? It’s a horrible resolution. 1024 x 768 can be a bit restricted on space, but 800×600 is terrible. Most content is based around 1024×768. That is a sensible resolution. If you know anybody still running at 800×600 please change their settings. Yes they may complain about everything being smaller, but its for their own good. Explain to them that they can eliminate the need to scroll horizontally when the content fits better on the screen.
I used a monitor at 1600×1200 whilst working at Hitachi, its a dream to surf on. There is more than enough space to see a page clearly. Sure if your eye sight isnt that good, go for a lower resolution and make things bigger. If 25% of computer users are using 800×600 still, a hell of alot of people need to visit the opticians.

I used to use 1280 x 1024 on my 17 inch CRT monitor but I got a 15 inch TFT not long ago so had to go down to 1024 x 768 which is also what I use on my laptop. It took some getting used to
800×600 is just a joke though, it’s horrendous to look at and try to use.
If you want another shock. Doom 3 will run at a maximum of 1024 x 768 on even the best computer. Most people will be running at best 800 x 600. 640 x 480 will be the standard for that.
I should be playing Doom 3 in about……. 2 hours 43 minutes
Let me know what it plays like
You’re not wrong Tunkio, although it offers very high resolutions it’s barely playable on 1024 x 768 on mine.
Tossers. Good game so far though with some cracking graphics, even on 800×600
